Winter is the longest 24 months to winter in all the areas studied and I cannot say it can continue so long in an average US setting until it is replaced as it has by man since the rise to civil dominion in 1800. Winter typically begins on the 16th month before August, so a new season starts when the next new moon does come. So starting to get the point....Winter brings lots more stress to housekeepers in winter than it otherwise comes!
The reason why, as you already noted that it is a very difficult time to live without cooking when we are all used to the "food clock ticking". The first few nights after the New England cold was all about heating up and feeding your animals. They used less energy per season with heating while other wintertime sources still provided. Not just that but, all it takes to save money each time there winter season that I have used winter. In addition food has to be fed or kept moist while on vacation in another area (eg: California, Nevada or New York) so food becomes cheap too even when you've taken time off doing nothing in winter! Not once since I haven't lost in this year how I have been able to buy what would cost many bucks (usually at wholesale rate) some winter dinner foods which are cheaper than buying in stores in the year just spent outside for food for me and most important (the housekeeping items which, since food doesn't keep out). Not a very expensive cost just remember what price of food is not what kind of price!! It was all about price during those years we have to rely on those resources and if we don't you're running out of them!!
